They close interstates. Who knew?

Matt and I left this morning for Iowa. We wanted to make it to Lincoln, Nebraska by tonight. That so isn’t going to happen, because we are now stuck in the middle of Nowhere, Wyoming. Ok, it’s actually Rawlins, Wyoming. Interstate 80 is closed from here to Laramie–there was bad weather (uncomfirmed by me, but speculated by others) and apparently a thirty-car pileup (confirmed by random people in our hotel). I assume this is true, because only the east-bound lanes are closed. Bad weather would close both sides, methinks.

I didn’t realize they actually closed interstates until today. I mean, I’ve seen the signs they use for if they close it, but it seemed like a thing that would never really happen, except for a hurricane or something like that. And Wyoming doesn’t really have a coast line. So we’re trapped. I’m starting to think this is a big scam to bring in money for the town of Rawlins. This place appears to be only hotels and fast-food joints. Every year we’ll close the interstate a few times and bring in some revenue! (There’s an exclamation point because that’s how I imagine the city’s council–or whoever makes these decisions–would sound when they came up with this plan.) It really is a good plan–there are cars and semis in all the hotel parking lots.

The one upside–they have a Taco John’s here. Six-pack and a pound, oh yeah! :) I’ve been deprived of potato oles in Logan. Starchy goodness and Diet Mountain Dew. It almost makes up for being stuck here. Almost. I hope they open up the road tomorrow…

  1. Ha, I know exactly what you are talking about! My sister and I got stuck there once on our way back from California, but we got there a long time after the road got closed, so there were no motel rooms. We planned to get to Cheyenne that night, so we went up to Casper and back down. We turned a 150 mile trip into a 300 mile trip, but at least it was an adventure.

  2. You’ve just been gone from Iowa too long! They closed the Interstates through Iowa due to weather (snow/ice) twice this last season. :)
